As Liberians go to the polls again today to elect a new President, Ghana Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan has thrown his weight behind former AC Milan and world football star, George ‘Opong’ Weah, one of the two main contenders in the election.
The first round of the election was organised on October 10, 2017 but no clear winner emerged as Weah’s Congress for Democratic Change, CDC had 38.8 percent of the votes while the Unity Party led by the 73-year-old Joseph Boakai, who has served as the Vice President under President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for the past 12 years, received 28.8 percent.
None of them garnered the 50 percent needed to win outright. Asamoah Gyan took to his Twitter account on December 26, to call on the people of Liberia to vote massively for the one-time world Football of the Year, saying he believes Weah has the wherewithal to govern Liberia.
Below is the full text of Asmaoah Gyan’s message which he posted as an image.
“I know second round in everything is a chance to right your wrongs, improve yourself and above all show the world you are the best. I believe leadership is God’s calling and this is your time to show Liberia, Africa, and the world God’s greatness in you.
“You are not someone who just wants to occupy a position because you have exhibited your passion for your country through football. You are a humanitarian, great leader in all aspects of life and above all, a visionary.
“You don’t win World Best Footballer on a platter of gold, you really worked hard for it and I know your motivation was from the of your country, Liberia.
“As Liberia goes to the polls for the 2nd round of elections, I Asamoah Gyan pledge my undying support for you my brother, George Weah. I believe in you and your vision for your great nation and I know the good people of Liberia believe in you.
“When I get the opportunity, I’ll personally come on the grounds to help you. I see you already as the President so just hope and pray because it will surely come to pass in few days to come.
“To my brothers & sisters in Liberia, George Weah has sacrificed his entire life for this beautiful country of yours. He is the only African to win the World’s Best Footballer. He has his country at heart and willing to work to make Liberia a better place.
“My name is Asmoah Gyan and I support George Weah as the next President of Liberia.”
